Definition and Usage

The canplay event occurs when the browser can start playing the specified audio/video (when it has buffered enough to begin).

During the loading process of an audio/video, the following events occur, in this order:

  1. loadstart
  2. durationchange
  3. loadedmetadata
  4. loadeddata
  5. progress
  6. canplay
  7. canplaythrough

Browser Support

The numbers in the table specify the first browser version that fully supports the event.

Syntax

In HTML:

<audio|video oncanplay="myScript">Try it

In JavaScript:

audio|video.oncanplay=function(){myScript};Try it

In JavaScript, using the addEventListener() method:

audio|video.addEventListener("canplay", myScript);Try it

Note: The addEventListener() method is not supported in Internet Explorer 8 and earlier versions.
